network is your net worth.

Know people.
Be friendly but have few friends. Really, all you need is to have alliances (social leverage) and an inner circle (loyal people). Don't mix family and friends with business.

In business, treat friends like strangers (professional) and strangers like friends (customer service). Practice empathy, see through the eyes of the market, see what you do (product) from the view of others. Be customer, market and people oriented for they are your greatest assets and hold your biggest opportunities.
