As stated on the AfDB website, the African Development Bank operates under the leadership of the President, who serves as the legal representative of the Bank, the Chairperson of the Board of Directors, and the Chief of Staff of the Bank. The President conducts the current business of the Bank, under the direction of the Board of Directors. The President is elected by the Board of Governors and serves a 5-year term, renewable once.
The current President, Dr. Donald Kaberuka, a national of Rwanda, was elected in July 2005, and commenced his first term on 1 September 2005. Following his re-election in May 2010, he commenced his last 5-year term on 1 September 2010. The new president is to resume on the 1st of September, 2015.
A total of 8 candidates contested for the position amongst whom were Akinwumi A. Adesina (Nigerian), Sufian AHMED (Ethiopian), Jaloul Ayed (Tunisian), Kordjé Bedoumra (Chadian), Cristina Duarte (Caboverdean), Samura M. W. Kamara
(Sierra Leone), Thomas Z. Sakala (Zimbabwean), Birama Boubacar Sidibé (Malian) .
Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina was born on February 6, 1960. His immediate last public role was Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. His performance in the aforementioned role was well celebrated in the Nigerian media. He has held previous positions as the Vice-President (Policy and Partnerships), Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). His combined experienced and performance made him a suitable candidate for the AfDB presidential position.
His academic qualifications are as follows; PhD in Agricultural Economics, Purdue University, USA (1988) – where he was awarded the Most Outstanding PhD Thesis. Masters in Agricultural Economics, Purdue University, USA (1985).Bachelor’s degree (1st Class Honors) in Agricultural Economics, University of Ife, Nigeria (1981).
Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina is to resume duties on September 1, 2015 when the tenure of the current AfDB president expires. He said on his twitter handle, @Akin_Adesina, "I am humbled by this remarkable vote of confidence in me by @AfDB_Group . I will not let Africa down."
